It is a Natural Space of strong personality and covers 38000 hectares of land. 26.893 of them belong to the town of Nijar, as web as the sea mile along its 45 km of seaside. Espacio Natural de fuerte personalidad, comprende 38.000 has. terrestres, de las que 26.893 pertenecen al Municipio de Níjar, además de la milla marítima a lo largo de sus 45 km de costa .

It was declared a Natural Park on December 23, 1987. The splendid volcanic mountain mass, know as the Sierra de Cabo de Gata; Las Salinas, a sheet of brackish water where the extraction of the salt is exploited and its Reserve of Waders Birds; and the coastal steppe of the Reserve of Steppe Birds and little mammals are wonderful.

The 45 km. of coast of the region of Nijar are inside the Natural Park. Alternated with high cliffs with craggy outlines, there are beautiful beaches and virgin creeks of fine sand and transparent water.

The sea-beds, the underwater continuation of the volcanic mountains of Cabo de Gata, are of unequalled beauty The junction of seas, they constitute the support of a great variety of the interesting fauna and plants for the tourist.

Its diversity in fauna and plants, geology and landscapes have convert it in one of the most representative ecosystems of the arid areas in the southeast of Spain; and the presence of the human beings and their harmonious relationship with the nature make this Park, declared Reserve of the Biosphere by the UNESCO, an indispensable place to visit for the Nature lovers. Rambling, mountain biking, equestrian tours, guided 4x4 tours, ship tours, canoeing… are some of the activities offered in the park, just as a large accommodation, catering and tourist services offering.
